Good questions! Here's my take.
Which bring up two questions: # 1 Why the hell would a pro be
embarrassed by something someone ELSE did?
Perhaps in a perfect world, he should be able to be more detached.
However, it's pretty hard for the casual listener to tell anything more
than that there's suckage coming from the stage. The important fact is
that it's pretty hard to change peoples feelings, but it's almost always
worth it to be considerate of them.
# 2 What is a pro doing at an 'open' jam, if they understand the set-up?
True enough. Everyone has a right to decide if they like the set-up or
not. Ultimately the gig belongs to the guy who's running the jam. If
you can't hack the rules, whatever they might be, you don't have to
participate. And no one likes a complainer; like the Mick says, "You
can't alway's get what you want" etc......
